Personal Assistant for Learning

Instructional efficacy

A controlled experimental study, carried out in the context of an actual physics course, yielded the following main results: (For details, see Research article about PALs.)
  • Students, learning by studying with PALs, performed almost as well as those studying while individually assisted by good human tutors.
  • Almost all of these students obtained scores above 65% on a subsequent performance test. By contrast, such high scores were obtained by only half of the equally able students who had studied while relying on the resources ordinarily available in a well-taught physics course.
  • Almost all of the students believed that the PALs had been very helpful to their learning.
